looking for acorns, food, and because that's what they do. cute little varmints.
looking for love
Looking for food.
It is possible that they are seeking out tree seeds if you have a tree nearby that drops seeds this is possible. If this is concentrated to one area it is possible that the nest is in this area.
Having only tiny brains, they forget where they hid their winter store of acorns, so dig everywhere to find food.
Squirrels will dig any ground where they think food is. of course this is generally where they have buried their own share of acorns but sometimes they can smell other yummy stuff. it looks like they may have, or think they have found, something that takes their fancy.

has your garden got any special plants or received treatment recently. it could be that the local food supply is low and the little devils are after an easy source of food that normally they wouldnt touch (squirrel kebabs!?!)
Probably because you have nuts burried in your lawn.
If they don't look or bury food so they want to sharp their claw and be busy.
They're looking for food..... Sometimes acorns.....

your sister,

Ginger
Maybe they think you're a nut.
They are burying nuts for the winter.
looking for food
Blondie's answer is correct. Studies have shown they bury food throughout areas near their nests. They do not worry about remembering where it is buried, rather they just start digging until the find some.
In the summer, they bury acorns, butternuts, and chestnuts. Then in the winter or when there isn't much food, they dig them up again.
If you put out peanuts for birds squirrel's will take them and store the nut's by burying them for winter use when times are hard
they are digging for gold
they probably think you to bone idle to do it yourself
I saw a squirrel burying a nut in our lawn. We have some walnut trees and the squirrels bury the nuts so they can dig them up later. I guess you could say it's their stockpile. Have you ever hear the term ';squirreling away'; something (in other words hoarding)?
