Should i have kept the baby squirrel?

when i was going home from school i found a little baby squirrel on the road he wasn't moving much and his eyes were shut, i picked him up and decided to take him to my local animal hospital, the lady at the counter said they'll bottle feed the little guy and let him free....my question is will the little guy survive and know what to do when he is set free? since his parents didn't teach him anything...should i have just kept him as a pet?Should i have kept the baby squirrel?
You did the right thing. Wild animals do not make good pets. Squirrels will become aggressive once they reach maturity, and most end up being put to sleep. Also, baby wildlife require very special care and diet that is best attempted only by those with experience. Your squirrel also likely needed subcutaneous fluids and possibly medication.

At the wildlife center where I work, we routinely accept animals that people have tried to raise themselves, and while their intentions are good, they do not know how to offer the proper care, and so often do not bringing the animal in until they are too far gone for us to save.

Wild animals rely very heavily on instinct to survive, so while a mother is helpful, they will learn on their own. Wildlife Rehabilitators often offer a ';soft release'; for the animals, meaning that they release them in a safe area, where they can continue to be fed until they learn to hunt out food on their own.

Good job on doing what was best for the little critter!Should i have kept the baby squirrel?
no, no! you did the best thing you could it will be happier in the wild! thanks for helping this little hunnie for some reason I feel like it's my job to take care of all the animals in the world and I feel like you are my helper.... I love ya for it thanks :D
i do think that i might have some troubl adapting to getting his own food but you did the right thing and either he makes it or he does not but either way you did what you had to do and in my opinion it was the smart thing to do. good job
no the vets did the right thing, no squirrels as pets :)

    hello

i dont know of any restaurants but hugh fearnley-whittingstall (chef) loves cooking with squirrel. If you go on the channel 4 website and click on food there are some of his recipies using squirrel like Squirrel Offal kebabs which you could try!!

    Happy Eating!!

=0)Are there any restaurants that serve Squirrel?
I doubt it, red squirrel is a protected species, grey squirrel is classed as vermin. I'm not sure about the exact legalities but you should be able to hit a grey squirrel with a rock kill it and eat it. But remember squirrels may carry rabies.
Grey Squirrel can be eaten and you may find a restaurant that specialises in Game that serves it. It is slightly more like chicken than rabbit. You may find it more easily on sale ready dressed to cook yourself.
When I was in a resaurant in Leeds, called ';Russels';, two squirrels came in and the waiters and manager went berserk and refused to serve them.
Where are you? I think there is one in Edinburgh.
    O God- how awful !!

Why would you want to do that ?

How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?

*crosses her arms* Well, squirrels are NOT pets and aren`t demesticated,go get a dog...*pouts* If you insist of getting something squirrel-like (can`t blame ya the tails and eyes are hard to resist I`m sure) then go with the suger-glider option. But really, squirrels aren`t to be taken in as pets unless absolutly unadle to live in the wild. When older they have a natural instinct to wanna get out and free. Can you blame them? How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?
cute as they are im not sure they make good pets have you heard of sugar gliders? research them online you can special order them at most pets stores they are marsupials and look similar to a squirrel, like to be held and are very cute. How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?
I had to foster three baby squirrels back in 2000, when my poor excuse of a boyfriend cut down a tree in our yard that had a nest in it,in which it contained three babies, I had to research everything I could about them to raise them and for properly releasing techniques, I did become very attached after keeping them for 12 weeks, but I knew they were a wild animal no matter if I kept them in my house or not. I do not think it would be a good idea for you to get attached to something that will eventually leave you without notice one day. No matter how much you have to do with the animal they will always have wild instincts they belong in wide open trees and nature.

  • Squirrel Question: tail with no fur?

Hi, I am really concerned about some of the squirrels in my front yard. About 5 months ago, I noticed a squirrel with no hair on his tail.. He almost looked like a rat. He was definately a squirrel though. More and more have cropped up over the months. Some have different degrees of hair loss on the tail - but always the tail. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? They are New Jersey squirrels (I guess the Grey Squirrel?) I'm afraid that if it's mange, my dog may catch it? or worse yet, maybe there is something growing out there that isn't good for animals? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks! JoyceSquirrel Question: tail with no fur?
It's probably mange or lice, both common to see on Mr Squirrel in the spring. It will spread if they come into contact with your dog. It's a mange mite, not the genetic kind. If your dog does come into contact and gets it, the vet will use an Ivomec based treatment to kill off the mange mites.Squirrel Question: tail with no fur?
The only way to find out for sure is to have one of your town's veterinarians look at them. Perhaps they will have the Department of Environmental Protection take a look too.
I have seen this in MI also. I have seen them with very thin tail hair, or missing lots of tail hair. But I have never seen the tails completly hairless. I think it is some type of mange or skin condition. I don't know what causes it.

Have you ever eaten squirrel & if so, does grey & red squirrel taste the same?

There was a programme on the radio last week and the guy said it tastes like rabbit!Have you ever eaten squirrel %26amp; if so, does grey %26amp; red squirrel taste the same?
I saw a program on t.v. a while back that mentioned the British were concidering them a delicacy.

Smotheed in enough gravy, and a dozen pints beforehand, they would probably be delicious.Have you ever eaten squirrel %26amp; if so, does grey %26amp; red squirrel taste the same?
No, squirrel taste's like squirrel. Stringy meated, but great with dumplings, cooked like chicken and dumplings. Also great fried, but miarinate in refridge for a couple of days to maybe nearly a week if possible. Dont worry, the meat will be fine in the refirdge for a week. Meat stays in the stores for a week or so. Try marinade in Coka Cola and Moore's and a little water, about equil parts each, it will help to break down the fibers in the meat.
Squirrel tastes like squirrel. It tastes nothing at all like rabbit. Red squirrel and fox squirrel are usually a little better, but just because they are usually bigger and not quite as tough.
Red squirrels are an endangered species in the UK so just go for the grey as they are escaped imports from the USA and we all know the americans love Bigger and Better than any other kind
red squirrels have a tastier tail because they are tandoori spiced
Ewww If the animal does not oink, moo, cluck or make bubbles in the water (Fish, Scallops and Shrimp), I ain't eating it!
Nope. No way. Not at all interested in trying them. Around here (Ohio) we also have black squirrels.

First, make sure you have removed ALL the skin, nothing worse than getting a bit of squirrel fur in you teeth. Next pop it into a crock pot. Cover with Cream of Mushroom Soup, and simmer for hours. Next, remove it, try to serve it, and then throw it out.

Now, can someone tell me why it is doing that weird army crawl? I have NEVER seen a squirrel do that. What does that behavior signify? ThanksI was just watching a squirrel delay the baseball game between the Indians and the White Sox.?
That was really funny. Great to watch.

I think he was waiting for a fly ball.

Seriously. His lay-down behavior is to absorb heat off the ground. By spreading out and laying flat on the ';dirt'; portion of the field, he absorbs the heat that that part of the field generates as a result of being hit by sunlight.

Smart, and fearless little guy isn't he? Great and wonderful animals Squirrels are. They add beauty, charm, and laughter to our lives.

How do i take care of a one week old baby squirrel?

found baby squirrel in backyard. I haven't seen any adult squirrels all day when i usually see all the time. besides giving it milk. what is the temp it needs to be at? and what else need to be done. i tried calling a wildlife number but no answer. The baby squirrel is 1 to 2 weeks oldHow do i take care of a one week old baby squirrel?
I found a baby squirrel about 4 years ago, it was very weak and lethargic, but I was able to nurse it back to health. I was actually raising baby birds at the time, so I fed it baby bird food. It comes in a container, it's a tan colored powder that you mix with water to make a paste, more or less water depending on what consistency. You can buy it at petsmart or another petstore. I used a syringe to feed it. I kept it in a bird breeding box inside of a bird cage. Be careful for fleas! We had to give her a flea bath and bug bomb our house because she brought fleas in : ( I don't think you need a heater, but I could be wrong. I think a blankie would be good enough inside of a box for it to feel safe. We offered fruit and nuts until she learned to eat on her own and then we stopped with the baby bird food. They are vegitarians. Also offer water. And be careful, when it gets older if it is out and about in your home, they will start chewing on electrical cords. I have to say, Coal was one of the best pets I ever had! She was so sweet and would play like a dog or cat with us. I would take her outside in our yard for a little while and she would come back inside, but eventually she started staying out longer and longer until she was living outside and visiting every so often. She came back to visit for years, even bringing her 'boyfriend' with her to get peanuts from us. I hope I was some help! Hopefully you can keep her alive and healthy and reintroduce her back outside. It is illegal to keep squirrels because they are wild animals, so be careful. I also had a baby bird at one point, but when he got older he landed on my rat's cage and my rat bit his leg. When we tried to take him to the vet to make sure he was ok, they took him away from us. I always wonder what happened to him. Anyway, enough of my babbling! Hope all goes well with you!How do i take care of a one week old baby squirrel?
