Safe to eat squirrel meat?

I recently got my hands on a cookbook that was written during the great depression... It has a section on eating urban game-meat, and it got me thinking;

Is it safe to consume squirrel meat now-a-days? particularly; are squirrel's prone to deceases/parasites that would make consumption risky in the montreal QC region?

Google revealed that people do eat squirrel meat in new jersy, but I am particularly curious about montreal.

Any answers with links to health advisories get extra karma!Safe to eat squirrel meat?
Yes you can eat squirril, but i dont recommend it.

Squirrels are basically tree-rats, and eat many of the same things that rats do. (its not dangerous or anything, its just not that great-tasting)

But if you want, and you have a decent recipe for it, you can do this:

Soak the meat in vinegar for a couple hours. It will get the gamey taste out of it, and it'll taste better.Safe to eat squirrel meat?
Understand the whole thing about a squirrel. It is a rodent in the rat family but it is good to eat. I personally have eaten them many times and they are a little gamy tasting but good. The main thing to worry about is after shinning and gutting them you should thoroughly clean the meat before frying. Preparation and frying is the same as you do with chicken. Have a good meal............gib
I don't think I would eat it but here's a link to an article talking about EPA regulations about squirrel meat or something...i hope its somewhat helpful...

It depends... The slower the squirrel the tastier the meat. This is because the meat has been aged locking in the juices. You need to cook with a very high heat in order to draw out the ambience of the meat, flavor is mild and somewhat urban-gamey. I don鈥檛 have too much information on Canadian Squirrel but the United States ground squirrel is a fine eat. Good eats!
all animals are safe to eat.....it is just that...meat. however it is best cooked unless you are starving of course.....most of asia eats dog......i spent time in taiwan we ate it a lot.....prisoners of war ate a lot of rats. squirrel is a delicacy in the south . yes it is safe to eat
Consuming squirrel brains can cause ';Creutzfeld-Jakob disease';. This is similar to mad-cow disease. The meat should be OK, just don't eat the brains. Use a meat thermometer and cook it to 165 F, just to be safe. This will kill in bacteria present in the meat.

I have hunted and eaten squirrel many times. It is very good.
