We have a squirrel-like thing in the backyard. It hops like a rabbit and has no tail. Looks like a squirrel.

omg! we have seen the same thing at my work! nobody believes us we have been calling it a scrabbit lol! have you found anything on it yet? please keep me posted, i would love to know!

Probably a marmot, or ground squirrel, which has a very short tail or no tail at all. I know it's not a chipmunk, because they generally have longer tails.
What country are you in? If Australia, it sounds like a bilby.
