As others have pointed out, the 17hmr is limited to small game. Check your local states small game catalog that will tell you what game is available for hunting and when. The lists above are common small game species, but check with your states regs before hunting.

While the 17hmr is a fantastic pure varmint gun, there are better choices in my opinion. Due to the price of ammo, the 17hmr does not function well as a range gun. The 22lr is more than adequate for all small game out to 100yards and can also double as a great range gun that won't break your bank. In contrast the 17hmr gets about 50 extra yards of ';effective'; range at about 5x the cost with no added killing power or additional game you can hunt over the 22lr.

Your other choice would be a larger centerfire rifle like a .223, .243/6mm, or even a .270, that are great large game guns for animals up to deer and even elk with the .270, but can also be loaded with lighter dedicated varmint ammo which is cheaper than the big game loads. You then have a gun that can reach out to 300+ yards and can also be used for bigger game if you want at a cost that isn't that much more than 17hmr shot for shot.

The 17hmr is just too impractical, and doesn't warrent the current cost for the advantages you get when compared to better choices. Just my 2 cents, enjoy whatever you decide to shoot. That's the most important thing.

Pretty much any small game or vermin up to about coyote size.

I would not recommend it for squirrels as you will be shooting above the horizon. The bullet will go through the squirrel and end up ???????? don't risk it.

For squirrels I recommend a small shotgun either .410 or 20 gauge.

I have a Mossberg 817 rifle and it uses .17HMR. The Remingtons are good while the Winchesters jam.

You can kill a lot....depending where you aim.
