It is illegal to keep any wild animal for a pet. In the few states that allow squirrels, raccoons, skunks and other native wildlife to be kept as pets, they must be purchased from a reputable breeder, not taken from the wild.

This is for two reasons - first, to protect native wildlife from being decimated by people taking wild animals out of the wild, out of the breeding population, and keeping them captive as pets. Second, to prevent the spread of disease. Many wild animals are vecters for disease, such as rabies and distemper, and they are host to parasites that also carry disease. By only allowing captive-bred animals to be kept as pets, the chances of a pet having a disease and transmitting it to its human owners is remote. In which states of the u.s. is it legal to keep a squirrel as a pet?
