I hear a pecking noise in my attic. What is it, a bird or a squirrel?

It could be any kind of critter; mice, woodpeckers, squirrels, rats, or bats. The only way you're going to find out is get up into the attic and look for traces of animals or birds.

Look for their droppings (white splashes for bats and birds, black bits for rodents like mice or rats).

Bats tend to be silent, except for high pitched squeaks or very faint scratching. Find them in clustered in dark, high up corners with their wings folded around their bodies and hanging upside down.

Mice and rats will hide in the attic insulation (if any) and make incessant scratching. You'll find their small, black rice-grain shaped droppings and scratch marks.

Squirrels need a much larger opening than mice, so unless you have a hole they can squeeze through it's probably not a squirrel.

If it's a woodpecker, you'll find multiple peck marks in the wood where they're trying to get at bugs and larvae in the wood. Usually they're not inside the attic. You hear their tapping sound from outside, but the sound travels through the beams.I hear a pecking noise in my attic. What is it, a bird or a squirrel?
squirrels don't peck and i can't think of any squirrel behavior that would sound like a pecking sound.

Therefore, my guess is that it's a bird. Set out some nuts and see if they're gone tomorrow. That would tell you if it's really a rodent or not.I hear a pecking noise in my attic. What is it, a bird or a squirrel?
It could be a bird or squirrel or even a rodent.
